The AEM-7 was derived from the Swedish class Rc electric. The allusion to meatballs is a reference to ‘Swedish meatballs’ and thus shortened to just meatballs, with Sweden being implied.

GME is proud to launch the newest addition to our range of AM/FM antennas, the AEM7. This rugged fiberglass antenna is Australian designed and manufactured as a mobile AM/FM antenna to suit the demands of the 4WD market. The AEM7 has been developed as a rugged mobile 650mm Fibreglass AM/FM Antenna to suit the needs of vehicles travelling off road. The AEM-7 electric locomotive resulted from a test the passenger carrier did on French and Swedish models. After several tests Amtrak was pleased with the Swedish Rc4 and would eventually settle on it as a basis for what would become its AEM-7.

Amtrak contracted with the General Motors Corporation's Electro-Motive Division (EMD) to design and manufacture the AEM-7 electric locomotive, a high-speed, lightweight model based on Swedish designs. The AEM-7 was produced from 1978 to 1988, and could reach speeds up to 125 mph. They were ordered to supplement the E-60 locomotives and replace the GG-1s inherited from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
